December 2016 picks for the Gardener

Author: John Roark
Issue: December, 2016, Page 124
WE LOVE LUCY
It’s a chair. It’s art. It’s both! Reimagining one of its best-selling pieces, the Lucy Chair, Bend Goods collaborated with textile artist Nikki Katz to create the limited-edition Hanging Lucy. Midcentury meets macrame in this playful, functional furniture art, crafted of hot-dip, rust-proof galvanized powder-coated metal and organic rope. Available in peacock blue (shown) and white, it measures 19"W by 15"D. $500 (bendgoods.com)

DECK THE WALLYears ago, ceramic artist Jim Sudal created for his gallery a holiday wreath made of real prickly pear cladodes—and visitors loved it. Prompted by frequent queries ever since, Sudal re-created the wreath in stoneware clay that is high-fired and glazed, then topped off with a raffia bow. The 16" in diameter original artwork is perfect for giving (or keeping) and available in limited quantities through Sudal’s Scottsdale gallery. $249 (jimsudalpottery.net)

BILLIARDS AL FRESCOInternationally acclaimed concrete designer James de Wulf has partnered with Restoration Hardware to create a cast-concrete table that takes billiards out of the parlor and into the great outdoors. Featuring a Sunbrella black felt playing surface, the table includes a set of balls, four cues, wood ball rack, table brush and chalk. A charcoal Sunbrella cover protects the playing surface when not in use. Delivered fully assembled. $18,995 (restorationhardware.com)
GOOD TO GROWStylish, compact and multifunctional, the GrowHouse is ideal for small-space, year-round indoor gardening. The 15.5"square by 6"D countertop or wall-mountable greenhouse retains moisture, and a preprogrammed grow light mimics dawn-to-dusk cycles, keeping herbs and leafy greens happy. The hinged door makes watering and harvesting a snap. $135 (modsprout.com)

MAGIC BULLETThe Retro Bullet Planter is a stylish midcentury throwback. Sleek and dapper, it can hold plants, serve as an ice bucket, or be used for whatever else strikes your fancy indoors or out. The Bullet is crafted of molded fiberglass and black metal, comes in three sizes ranging from 16"-30"H, and available in a rainbow of cool colors. $170-$180 (forthepeoplestore.com)
GARDEN VARIETY This set of five handcrafted garden tools will inspire both beginning and experienced gardeners. Each piece is crafted of forged steel using traditional blacksmithing techniques, with steel rivet joinery and hand-turned walnut handles. Set includes a large trowel, three-tined rake, narrow tulip trowel, and pointed and squared-off hoes. $290 (boxhill.com)

LOVELY BRANCHES Light up the nights with the Hanging Solar Gazing Ball, a beautiful and festive holiday accent for trees and gardens. Available in a range of mosaic patterns and colors, the ornaments’ batteries recharge during sunlight hours, and the 8" in diameter globes cast a soft glow when the sun goes down. $62.50 (southwestgardener.com)
