Tufted Furniture

Author: Shawndrea Corbin
Issue: February, 2013, Page 52
The Deconstructed 19th-Century English Wing Chair (above) was conceived when a couple of designers “liberated” their grandfather’s antique velvet chair to reveal the original structure underneath. This timeless “bare bones” piece is available through Restoration Hardware.

Whether tufts are riveted into a strapping leather armchair or gently pushed into a luxurious velvet lounge, tuft love is hot. Tufted furniture, a classic style that was commonly seen throughout the parlors of yesteryear, has gained new oomph on the design front and renewed interest from consumers. From ottomans to couches, single headboards to entire daybeds, tufted furnishings conjure images of classic romance. On the pages ahead, see some innovative pieces that just might make you swoon. But don’t worry, we’ll catch you.

The “Finishing Touch” bench by Caracole exudes eclectic charm in its unique coloring and composition. The metal base is bamboo-inspired and, for an antiquated look, is finished to resemble the build-up on a piece that has been painted many times.

A curvy quatrefoil shape defines the Edward Ottoman by Gabby. Topped with tufted linen, it has an iron base with a smaller quatrefoil motif in the center.
The Buffalo Collection’s Tavern Sofa is a typical Chesterfield sofa design with a Southwest twist. The sofa is set in Ute Adobe buffalo leather and accented with braided-leather trim.

The Churchill Sofa by Restoration Hardware, with its “clubby good looks,” was designed to sit lower and deeper than the company’s other models. The piece comes in lengths ranging from 5' to 9'.
Featured here in a snakeskin-print, this round tufted ottoman by Jessica Charles is available in numerous upholstery options.

Nailhead trim and unique “feet” add to the appeal. • Channeling old Hollywood glamour, this Grant sectional from American Leather is available in leather, fabric or Ultrasuede. • Jessica Charles recently unveiled its new capsule collection set in Pantone’s “Color of the Year,” emerald. Upholstered in a wild jungle-esque print, the Hug Chaise is a Modern adaptation of the tufted look. • Dark leather upholstery and wingback style make a sultry combination in this Ackley Chair from Peninsula Home.
